About Parents Powwow

Providing freely-available, evidence based information written by practicing midwives.

Today’s maternity services are delivered differently to how they used to be. Hospital stays are much shorter, postnatal care is often provided in clinics in the community, and new and expectant parents surf The Internet for answers to their questions. Parents Powwow was born out of our desire to offer non-judgemental evidence-based guidance, support and reassurance to new and expectant parents – when they need it – where they need it.

Because we continue to work as NHS midwives, we are able to provide readers with information that is relevant and up-to-date. Blogs are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the latest research evidence base and recognised best practice. We want our readers to be able to make the ‘right’ choices for them and their baby, so our information is designed to facilitate informed choice, and to guide and open-up discussions between parents and their maternity health professionals. We recognise the amount of medical ‘jargon’ used in maternity services, so we always include ‘lay’ descriptions alongside the ‘medical’ terms featured. A list of references and suggested further reading is included as standard with every blog, should parents wish to read around topics in more depth.

If there are any specific topics that you’d like to see included on this website; please get in touch.
